Rubio Denounces Newest Bundy-Led Standoff: ‘You Can’t Be Lawless’

Marco RubioMarco Rubio became the first Republican presidential candidate to weigh in on the armed standoff in Oregon Monday, saying that Ammon Bundy and his followers need to “follow the law.”

“Let me just say, first of all, you’ve got to follow the law,” Rubio told Iowa radio station KBUR. “You can’t be lawless.”

While, Rubio said he agreed with those who criticized the federal government’s land use policies, he stressed the importance of democracy.  “We live in a republic,” he continued. “There are ways to change the laws of this country and the policies. If we get frustrated with it, that’s why we have elections. That’s why we have people we can hold accountable.”

“There are states… that are dominated by the federal government in terms of land holding and we should fix it, but no one should be doing it in a way that’s outside the law,” he concluded. “We are a nation of laws, we should follow those laws and they should be respected.”

A number of Republican presidential candidates were publicly supportive of the Bundy patriarch Cliven Bundy‘s armed standoff with the federal government in 2014, but Rubio was not one of them. Among the previous Bundy supporters who have yet to weigh in are Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Ted Cruz.
