Senate Successful In Breaking Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Filibuster (Updated)
Senator Joseph Lieberman promised movement in the Senate on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he delivered a filibuster-proof majority vote of 63-33 on the procedural issue to advance the bill. The ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in uniform is now one step closer to being repealed.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid withdrew the government spending bill on Thursday in order to enable the Senate to focus on getting other important business done before the end of this session. The tradeoff seems to have worked on at least one front, as ending the ban on gays in the military now seems likely to occur, and possibly by the end of today.
Update: Senate scheduled to vote on full repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell at 3pm EST
