UPDATE: Shooter Dead, Two in Critical Condition After Maryland School Shooting

Details are emerging about the school shooting just after 8:15 AM this morning in Great Mills, MD. Three students – a teenage boy, a teenage girl, and the shooter – are in critical condition.

According to St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron (via NBC Washington), the gunman shot two of his classmates before being injured by a school resource officer, who also pulled out a gun. The school resource officer was not injured.

The FBI and ATF are currently on the scene and assisting local law enforcement’s investigative efforts. Parents have been asked to report to nearby Leonardtown High School after the school is released from lockdown. The Sheriff’s Office asserted, however, that the situation is contained.

Meanwhile, not even a month ago, Great Mills High parents reached out to a local newspaper to report similar threats to those made before the Parkland shooting, which were issued on Snapchat. Great Mills students saw videos in the hallways mentioning “shooting” and “school.”

The report led to an investigation, and Dr. Jake Heibel, the school’s principal, issued a statement that there was no substantial threat.

“We interviewed the student with our SRO, viewed video, interviewed other students, and contacted central office. The threat was not substantiated,” he said.

UPDATE 11:38 AM: The shooter, who was injured in a shootout with a school resource officer, was pronounced dead.
