Missouri Senate Candidate Rep.Todd Akin will hold a press conference at 4:15 p.m. CDT (5:15 p.m. EDT). The details of the press conference are not known, but Akin has made waves with highly insensitive comments regarding rape. He has been hounded by conservative pundits and elected officials to drop out of his highly competitive Missouri Senate race and spent the later part of this week meeting with GOP officials, ostensibly to discuss his electoral future.
The press release from the Akin campaign was deliberately vague:
Todd Akin will hold a press conference in St. Louis County today at 4:15pm central time. Details to follow.
Akin was the subject of several days of news coverage after he told a local Missouri television station that, in the case of a “legitimate rape,” women have the ability to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
The fallout that resulted from these comments was significant – many conservatives called on Akin to drop out, but he has so far resisted those calls.
More detail to follow as they become known.
UPDATE: CNN’s Dana Bash tweeted that sources tell her Akin will not drop out. She joins the National Journal‘s Josh Kraushaar who also reported that sources close to Akin claim he will remain defiantly in the race.
Kraushaar quotes a source close to Akin who claims that the Congressman wants to generate some headlines while there was still interest in his campaign:
“He just wanted to get himself in front of the Missouri press,” the source said.
