For the first time in their history, the Houston Astros are World Series champions.
The Astros went on a truly magnificent run through October. After beating the Red Sox in four to open the postseason, Houston survived a compelling seven-game series against the Yankees to punch their ticket to the Fall Classic.
And then in the World Series, Houston met the National League champion L.A. Dodgers. The series had two crazy games — and the Astros won them both. Houston came back from 3-2 down in the ninth and survived a wild extra innings sequence to beat L.A. 7-6 in 11 — to avoid going two games down. Then, in one of the wackiest contests in World Series history, the Astros won a dramatic 13-12 game in 10 innings on Sunday night to take a 3-2 series lead. They prevailed in Game 7, thanks to some crucial hits in the early innings.
Many began pulling for the Astros thanks to a number of magnetic personalities — led by star Jose Altuve. World Series MVP George Springer has his share of fans, as does star pitcher Justin Verlander. This one was an extremely popular victory with many baseball fans.
