WATCH: Massive Fireworks Display Shoots Into Crowd, Injures 28 People

While Fourth of July is best known in modern American culture as an evening of barbecued meats and gratuitous fireworks, it is also one of the more dangerous holidays, solely because of the potential for pyrotechnic mishaps. Last night in California, things did go wrong.

A fireworks display in Simi Valley last night sent 20 people to the hospital, and injured eight others, after it exploded and began shooting sideways and into the crowd of 10,000 spectators. People were reportedly screaming as they could see the fireworks “on the ground” before them.

The park was eventually evacuated and a bomb squad came in to remove the leftover fireworks. Luckily, no fatalities were reported, but four people experienced “moderate to severe” injuries resulting from shrapnel or burns.
