Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will appear before the House Judiciary Committee today, where he is likely to face questions about the integrity of the FBI and Robert Mueller‘s special counsel investigation on Russia. The hearing will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST.
Over the past few months, various conservative figures have expressed concern about Mueller’s potential overreach and bias within his counsel. This being the case, today’s hearing is likely to focus on Peter Strzok, the FBI agent on Mueller’s team who was recently reassigned in light of his negative commentary about President Trump.
Strzok used to work closely with former FBI director James Comey, and he reportedly oversaw the Justice Department’s investigation and ambiguous statement on Hillary Clinton‘s private email scandal. Congressional investigators have now looked through Strzok’s communications records, and his text messages show an obvious dislike of the president.
Even though Mueller has brought charges against numerous officials who used to be part of Trump’s team, there’s a good chance GOP committee members will take the opportunity to challenge Rosenstein on whether the investigation is tainted. In the meantime, Democrats are likely to ask for reassurance that Trump will not be able to interfere with the probe while it remains in effect.
