Watch the Marlins’ Emotional Tribute to Jose Fernandez
The Miami Marlins paid tribute to their fallen ace pitcher Jose Fernandez Monday, who was killed in early Sunday a boating accident at the age of 24.
Following an emotional pre-game ceremony in which the Marlins and the New York Mets embraced — in a scene evocative of the first Mets game played in New York following the 9/11 attacks — Marlins shortstop Dee Gordon hit a home run in the Marlins’ very first at-bat of the game.

The homer was truly remarkable given that it was Gordon’s very first of the season.
Gordon reflected on the moment to Fox Sports Florida after the game:
“I don’t have kids, so that’s best moment of my life, to hit a home run for him.”
After the Marlins finished off their 7-3 victory, they gathered together in a circle around the mound, and placed their caps on the hill as they left.
We played for you.
We won for you.
We will forever honor you.#JDF16 pic.twitter.com/YX3zCxjaGI
