Zohran Mamdani Smoked by the Right for Asking New Yorkers to Set ACs to 78 Degrees
It’s a hot one, and we’re not talking about the weather.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is feeling the heat from the right after he posted an air conditioning recommendation ahead of a major heat wave hitting the Big Apple this week.
“New York: it’s hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool,” Mamdani posted to X on Wednesday. “Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you’re not using, and unplug what you can.”
He added: “Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment.”
The post prompted an uproar on social media, with numerous figures stepping up to scold Mamdani, and warn that the Big Apple might be a little too “red” as a result.
Barstool boss Dave Portnoy, who said earlier this week that he may challenge Mamdani for mayor, led that charge, saying, “Welcome to communism people! Hope you enjoy!”
On Fox News, the curvy couch at Fox & Friends echoed those remarks, with Brian Kilmeade saying, “When it’s 78 degrees, that’s when you usually put the AC on, but not in Communist New York City!”
Kilmeade’s co-host Lawrence Jones added: “I don’t think he was joking, though. I think we should take him seriously. This is Step 1 of ‘Little Commie Mamdani.'”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also joined the pile-on, but was hit with a savage community note as Texas leaders have made the same request in the past.
But perhaps the outrage is slightly overblown, as several others have pointed out that Mamdani’s AC recommendation is actually nothing new.
Former NYC Mayors Eric Adams (D), Bill de Blasio (D), and even Rudy Giuliani (R) have made identical statements in the past.
