‘Woke 1 Was Crazy!’ AOC Distances Herself from Anti-Thanksgiving Socialist’s Prior Stances

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) joked Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong (D) went a bit too far to the left for her taste with Hong’s call to abolish cops, prisons, and even Thanksgiving during a Sunday morning interview on ABC’s This Week.

Co-Anchor Jonathan Karl asked AOC for her take on Hong, after the democratic socialist made headlines last week for a deleted post where she argued for canceling Thanksgiving; after giving CNN a rambling answer about the post last Monday, Hong later did a complete 180 flip two days later and told Politico it was now her favorite holiday.

AOC gave her a bit of a pass for it, as well as her call to abolish prisons and police, by saying Hong had “moved away” from many of her old stances. She then quipped a local NYC councilman has a great line for it — “Woke 1 was crazy.”

The comment cracked Karl up. He then asked if Democrats went “too far” with some of their positions, and noted AOC “briefly supported the idea of defunding the police.”

Ocasio-Cortez said the Covid-19 lockdowns made everyone a bit kooky and willing to humor extreme ideas.

“During this time, and especially during Covid, there was a huge opening of the Overton window… and I think the doors were really opened in trying to entertain any and every policy that was going to get us to a better place,” she said.”And I actually think the discussions that were had in that time were quite fruitful.”

She added, “During lockdown, of course, rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric we would use today.”

As for AOC’s quip about “Woke 1” being crazy, she got swept up in it like Hong did, apparently, because she said in 2019 it was time to have a “real conversation” about abolishing prisons.

Despite her tepid defense of Hong, AOC did not go as far as endorsing her.

When Karl asked her if she was going to support Hong, AOC said, “No, I haven’t endorsed in that race. My focus has been in winning back the Congress.”
