Alabama Democrat on Strict Abortion Ban Bill’s Passage: ‘I Think That We Raped Women Last Night’
An Alabama Democratic state senator who voted against legislation that would effectively ban all abortions in his state compared the bill’s passage to rape.
State Sen. Bobby Singleton, the minority leader of the Alabama Senate, says “I think that we raped women last night,” speaking with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on New Day Wednesday.
“We made women of Alabama the model of the new Roe v. Wade,” Singleton continued. “I think this is just a horrible bill.”
The bill would be the most restrictive ban on abortion in the country if signed into law by Alabama’s Republican Gov. Kay Ivey. Ivey has not publicly taken a stance on the bill, but has previously indicated she is anti-abortion.
The bill would make performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony, potentially punishing doctors who perform abortions with up to 99 years or even life in prison. The bill does not allow exceptions for cases of rape and incest.
Republican sponsors of the bill have said the intent of the legislation is to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, which established a woman’s right to an abortion.
CNN Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin said late Tuesday that the Alabama bill effectively banning abortions is likely only the first step for many states attempting to outlaw abortion.
“Donald Trump said repeatedly he was going to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Toobin said. “There are now five votes on the court to overturn Roe V. Wade. All Alabama is doing is following the news.”
