Bernie Sanders Blasts Elon Musk at Mamdani Rally: ‘We Are Not Going to Allow’ Tesla Boss to Become a Trillionaire
Sen. Bernie Sanders (D) said he and Zohran Mamdani (D) “are not going to allow” Tesla CEO Elon Musk to become the world’s first trillionaire, if they have anything to do with it.
The two appeared at a rally for the New York City mayoral frontrunner on Saturday afternoon.
“It’s important that we feel the outrage of children going hungry, people being homeless, 85 million without healthcare, [and] you got one guy — one guy — Mr. Musk, whose own wealth is more than the bottom 52% of American households,” Sanders said.
The 83-year-old socialist continued: “You may have seen in the papers, they want to give him a little bonus —another $800 billion-$900 billion! We are living in crazy world! Millions of people struggling to put food on the table, and making one guy a trillionaire is insane, not about what this country is supposed to be about, and we are not going to allow that to happen.”
Sanders made the bold comment while standing beside Mamdani at the “Fighting Oligarchy” town hall at Brooklyn College. He was referring to Tesla’s board of directors proposing a new pay package for Musk that could push his net worth north of $1 trillion. Despite a rocky year for Tesla on Wall Street, Musk remains the world’s richest person, with a net worth of $342 billion, according to Forbes.
The senior senator from Vermont did not share specifics on how he and Mamdani would block Musk from becoming a trillionaire. Sanders, a moment before calling out Musk, railed against the richest one percent of Americans, saying they have “never had it so good.” Meanwhile, working-class Americans are facing unprecedented financial pain Sanders said — which is why he believes New York would be best served electing a Democratic Socialist like Mamdani.
In related news, CNN’s Abby Phillip on Friday night pressed Mamdani on his plan to open five government-run grocery stores if he wins in November.
