‘BOOOOOO!’ Marjorie Taylor Greene Sparks Uproar in the House by Calling for Vote on Speaker’s Fate
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is moving forward with a vote on whether to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his position. The move elicited loud boos from her colleagues.
Shortly after, the House voted to kill her resolution.
Greene filed a motion to vacate the chair in March, which would have entitled her to call for a vote of the House on whether to remove Johnson. Although the Georgia lawmaker declined to move forward at the time, on Wednesday she called for a vote.
“The resolution is as follows,” she said on the House floor. “Declaring the office of speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant–”
Greene was interrupted by a loud chorus of boos.
“Boooooo!” shouted several lawmakers in unison. “Boooooo!’
“This is the uniparty, for the American people watching,” she said, referring to her detractors.
Her comment prompted more boos.
“Speaker Johnson has not lived up to a single one of his self-approved tenets,” she claimed. Greene has criticized Johnson for shepherding through several short-term government funding bills and for approving foreign aid packages, including aid to Ukraine, which Greene has long opposed.
The lawmaker’s effort has garnered criticism from her fellow Republicans.
“She needs her time in the spotlight, you know, and it’s been a while, and I think it’s one last ditch effort to get attention, is what she’s looking for,” said Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX). Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-RX) called Greene’s effort to oust Johnson “silly.”
Current House rules allow a single member to file a motion to vacate and trigger a vote of the full House on removing the speaker. In October, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed such a motion, which ultimately led to the removal of then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Just eight Republicans voted to remove McCarthy, but that was sufficient because all Democrats voted to oust him as well. Three weeks after his removal, the House elected Johnson.
