CNN’s Kasie Hunt Wonders If Trump’s ‘MAGA Crew’ Would Have Backed O.J. Simpson During Murder Trial
CNN’s Kasie Hunt asked whether Donald Trump’s “MAGA crew” would have backed O.J. Simpson during his 1994 double murder trial during a panel discussion on the passing of the former NFL running back.
During the discussion on CNN This Morning about the passing of Simpson at 76, CNN contributor Ashley Allison argued race continues to be at the center of Simpson’s trial and the opinions surrounding it. Simpson was found not guilty for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, but he was later found responsible in a civil suit.
“Until this country is ready to have an honest conversation about the racial dynamics from our origin story to today, we will always have moments like O.J. Simpson that manifest and our country will always be divided if we don’t actually deal with the issue of race,” Allison said.
Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell then said she found similarities between Simpson and Donald Trump ahead of the latter’s April 15 trial start date in his Manhattan hush-money case. The former president is facing more than 30 felony charges stemming from a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged affair. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and the affair.
“It reminded me of Trump. There’s some very Trumpy, early elements to this case,” Longwell said, adding, “Everybody knows both are guilty.”
Hunt then held up a copy of the New York Post with a headline that read: “Real Killer Is Dead.”
“Part of me wonders if it were reversed in this day and age, that the MAGA crew wouldn’t have been behind O.J. Simpson, I mean, maybe it’s like 17 bridges too far, I don’t know,” Hunt said.
She continued the Simpson-Trump comparison.
“I’m just thinking a lot about how our information travels here because, Isaac, the way that Donald Trump uses the information fields that are available to him to kind of flood it in a way that basically convinces people, you should believe this set of facts because you believe this about how the world should be,” Hunt said.
Washington Post reporter Isaac Arnsdorf argued that even though there won’t be cameras inside Trump’s Manhattan courtroom (as there were in Simpson’s trial), there will still be enough coverage to compare to the wall-to-wall coverage the Simpson trial had.
“There won’t be cameras in the courtroom, but there will be cameras all around the courtroom and we’ll watch Trump’s plane go to New York and we’ll watch Trump’s motorcade go to the courthouse and there’s something very white Ford Bronco about that,” he said.
