Nevada’s Jon Ralston Chalks Predicted Kamala Harris Victory Up to Powerful ‘Democratic Machine’
The Nevada Independent editor and revered politics expert Jon Ralston believes the “democratic machine” will be enough for Vice President Kamala Harris to win the state by a slim margin.
In a blog post published Monday, Ralston — who has a track record of accurately predicting elections in the state — explained why he believes Harris will take the state by just three-tenths of a percentage point. Although Donald Trump held a lead of about 43,000 votes at the time of the blog post due to a strong GOP push for early and mail-in voting, Ralston was confident in Democrats’ ability to overcome the early deficit.
Shortly after the blog post went up, Ralston appeared on MSNBC to explain his prediction further. He added:
It’s hard to tell in Nevada. Listen now, you guys said the right number: 43,000-ballot lead for the Republicans; but the democratic machine here is still formidable. As you know, it’s won the last four presidential cycles; and so I just think that they’re going to be able to get enough ballots in between now and the end of the week — because they have till the end of the week for mail ballots if they’re postmarked before the election — to just squeak it out.
But, I mean, I predicted that Harris will win by, you know, two-tenths of a percent — I mean, three-tenths of a percent, excuse me — and so, come on, that’s very few votes, so it could go either way. So I’m hoping I’m right. I always hope I’m right, but there is that off chance that I could be wrong; but I hope I’ll still be an MSNBC contributor nevertheless.
Such a slim margin, Ralston continued, could lead to a recount. While it wouldn’t trigger an automatic recount, he claimed “you can be sure” a recount would be requested.
