Former President Donald Trump bragged about the endorsement he received from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday hours after trashing the governor of Iowa for backing Ron DeSantis.
Abbott, a longtime ally of the Republican frontrunner, gave his official endorsement at an event honoring service members near the U.S.-Mexico border. He praised Trump for his hawkish immigration policies, including his stance on Title 42, building a border wall, and ending catch and release for undocumented immigrants.
“We need a president who’s going to secure the border. We need a president who’s going to restore law and order in the United States of America. Not letting these criminals run ransack over the stores that you see images of almost nightly. We need a president who’s going to restore world peace as opposed to this outbreak of warfare under Joe Biden. We need Donald J. Trump back as our president of the United States of America,” Abbott said.
Moreover, Trump took to Truth Social and shared stories of Abbott endorsement hours after bashing Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds for her endorsement of DeSantis. On Saturday Reynolds joined the Florida Gov. for the opening of a new campaign office just hours before Trump’s Iowa MAGA rally.
He attacked the Republican Gov. as a “birdbrain” and failure in his wrath over the event. The influential governor’s endorsement and continued support of DeSantis could pose a threat to Trump winning that state’s GOP caucus.
Currently, Trump is the clear frontrunner in Iowa with an average polling lead of 47%, according to Real Clear Politics. However, Reynolds has remained neutral for months in the lead up to the state caucus until giving her full support to DeSantis earlier this month.
