A New Orleans magician who holds world records in fork bending and straight jacket escape said he was behind A.I.-generated robocalls to New Hampshire primary voters that are currently being investigated.

Paul Carpenter spoke with NBC News this week and claimed he was paid $150 by a former operative with Dean Phillips’ presidential campaign to use A.I. software to imitate President Joe Biden’s voice and encourage voters to stay home. The Phillips campaign said they were unaware of the actions of the operative, Steve Kramer, and threatened legal action if the allegations against him end up being true.

“I was in a situation where someone offered me some money to do something, and I did it. There was no malicious intent. I didn’t know how it was going to be distributed,” Carpenter said.

Kramer would only say that he has an op-ed being published Saturday that will explain his side of the story. Carpenter claimed he had no knowledge of how the fake Biden calls would be used.

Carpenter demonstrated the process of mimicking Biden’s voice authentically with Eleven Labs.

“It’s so scary that it’s this easy to do. People aren’t ready for it,” he said.

In his demonstration, Carpenter used Eleven Labs to impersonate the voice of NBC News reporter Alex Seitz-Wald.

“That sounds like me!” the reporter said.

“It sounds just like you,” Carpenter said, going on to show how the software can not only mimic a voice, but it can also be used to change the tone of what someone is “saying.”

“The only thing missing from the political circus is a magician and here I am,” Carpenter said.
