Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) suggested that the purpose behind the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden is to return Donald Trump to the White House on Wednesday.

“All I can say is Donald J. Trump 2024, baby,” replied Nehls after being asked what he was “hoping to gain from an impeachment inquiry.”

House Republicans are expected to rubber stamp the investigation later on Wednesday afternoon, more than three months after former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he was opening up such an inquiry without holding a vote on the House floor.

New Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has stated that he believes a vote is necessary to make the inquiry — which pertains to the president’s involvement in his son Hunter Biden’s various foreign business dealings — official.

Hunter Biden was scheduled to show up for a closed-door deposition in a House Office building on Wednesday morning, but instead held a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building during which he argued that the “MAGA right” was smearing him for “political purposes.”

“For six years, MAGA Republicans, including members of the House committees who are in a closed door session right now, have impugned my character, invaded my privacy, attacked my wife, my children, my family, and my friends,” said Biden. “They have ridiculed my struggle with addiction. They belittled my recovery and they have tried to dehumanize me, all to embarrass and damage my father, who has devoted his entire public life to service.”

He went on to say that while he would not sit for a deposition, he would “testify at a public hearing to answer any of the committee’s legitimate questions.”

Republicans have argued that a closed door deposition must be conducted first so that the proceeding doesn’t devolve into a political circus.
