JD Vance Roasted For Wrongly Claiming Average New Car Costs $50K Per Year: ‘Just Making Sh*t Up’

Vice presidential candidate JD Vance was roasted on social media for claiming new cars cost $50,000 annually — and blaming Vice President Kamala Harris for it.

Vance on Wednesday was in Byron Center, Michigan, for a campaign rally. During his speech, he listed a variety of everyday costs that he claimed are more expensive as a direct result of the current administration.

“Under Kamala Harris, gas prices are up 50%,” Vance said, “and I know we’re a trucking company. You think truckers benefit when gas prices go up 50%? No, and neither do the people who depend on truckers, which is every single one of us.

“Housing costs have doubled. Grocery prices are up 21%. A record number of Americans are working multiple jobs; and I happen to believe in a simple principle that if you work hard and play by the rules, you ought to be able to afford a good life in the country your parents and grandparents built. Isn’t that simple?”

Shortly after those comments, however, he took things a step further when got to the automotive industry.

“The average new car costs nearly $50,000 a year,” he claimed. “And this November, my friends, we’re going to send a message that Michigan chooses prosperity over poverty, and that we will never accept four more years of Kamala Harris. She’s outta there!”

According to data gathered by AAA, that figure is far from accurate. Last year, the average annual cost of new car ownership was a little over $12,000 — or about $1,015 per month. While that number is still high, it’s nowhere near Vance’s claims.

Many online were confused as to where he could have gotten such a number and accused Vance of being out of touch with the kinds of cars driven by average Americans. Others accused him of deliberately lying.
