Tom Emmer Slogs Through 5 Ballots to Eke Out Majority in GOP’s Closed-Door Speaker Vote
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) secured the Congressional Republican’s third nomination to be the new Speaker of the House.
Emmer’s victory came on Tuesday after five rounds of secret votes within the GOP conference. Emmer faced down a challenge from eight other Republicans who sought the speakership, though his primary rival turned out to be House Republican Vice Chairman Mike Johnson (LA).
According to the vote total obtained by POLITICO’s Olivia Beavers, Emmers came out on top of Johnson at 117 to 97.
It remains to be seen whether Emmer will be able to secure the 217 House votes he needs from the full chamber to become the speaker and end the paralysis Congress has seen since Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ouster. Emmer’s bid follows the failed attempt of House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), and the withdrawn bid of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA).
