President-Elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) to be his secretary of State, the New York Times reported on Monday evening.
The report noted that Trump may still change his mind, but it appears the former and future president has “settled on Mr. Rubio.”
The Times noted that Rubio has a track record of hawkishness on China and Iran and has expressed skepticism of continued U.S. aid to war-torn Ukraine. Last week, he said the U.S. “is funding a stalemate in Ukraine” and that “it needs to be brought to a conclusion.”
Rubio was first elected to the Senate in 2010 and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, where he repeatedly collided with Trump, who referred to the senator as “Little Marco.” After the primary, Rubio became a staunch supporter of Trump.
Spokespersons for Trump and Rubio did not comment to the Times.
