Trump presidential campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany criticized Alabama’s near total ban on abortion in the state, but didn’t say if President Donald Trump will speak out on the ban.
McEnany was speaking on MSNBC’s Weekends With Alex Witt where she was asked about her thoughts on the controversial law that includes no exceptions for rape or incest.
“Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the lack of exemptions goes against congressional Republicans’ record,” Witt noted. “Do you think Alabama’s ban is a strategic mistake?”
“You know, I personally am for the exceptions,” McEnany responded. “The president has been clear since the last campaign he’s for exceptions for rape and incest and life of the mother.”
When asked if she knew whether the president planned to speak out against the law, McEnany demurred.
“I can’t say what the president plans to do but I will say he’s said repeatedly he’s for those three exceptions,” she said.
McEnany later got into an argument with Democratic strategist Peter Emerson over her characterization of the Democratic party as in favor of “late term abortions.”
“Kayleigh is speaking on behalf of the [Trump] campaign,” Emerson argued. “As such she’s representing a president who has been documented lying over 10,000 times. She’s perpetuating this myth and these lies that Democrats want to kill people at the very end of pregnancy.”
McEnany responded that “the facts don’t lie.” Emerson shot back, “Unfortunately, you do lie, and consequently I have no interest in discussing this with you, ’cause you lie all the time.”
