A recent Gallup poll revealed Pope Leo XIV to be the most popular newsmaker in the U.S., and also provided readers with a glimpse of the other side of the spectrum.
According to last week’s poll, the new Pope had a net favorability of +46 among Americans as of July. Of those surveyed, 57% said they viewed Pope Leo XIV favorably while just 11% had an unfavorable view of him.
Additionally, the poll revealed that Pope Leo was the only prominent newsmaker who was positively viewed by both parties.
On the very opposite end of the spectrum was billionaire Elon Musk, who saw his net favorability drop to a staggering -28. Musk’s favorability was actually five points lower than embattled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The report continued:
Musk went from being viewed slightly more negatively than positively (43% favorable, 47% unfavorable) to having a nearly 2-to-1 negative image (33% favorable, 61% unfavorable). That swing from -4 to -28 net favorability is also a 24-point change.
The survey did not go into specific reasons for Musk’s decline in favorability, but his image has taken a hit among a variety of groups for a number of reasons. The X owner had already gotten on the Democrats’ bad side as a result of him aligning with President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election, and his feud with the president just a few months later soured his reputation among Republicans, as well.
