Nikki Haley Claims Civil War Questioner at Her Town Hall Was a Secret Democratic ‘Plant’

Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley defended her curious comments about the cause of the Civil War at a town hall on Wednesday night, claiming in an interview the next morning the question came from a Democrat “plant” who was out to get her.

The Republican presidential candidate spoke with New Hampshire radio host Jack Heath as she faces some blowback for her answer on why the Civil War happened. Haley’s ambling answer ended up blaming the Civil War on issues of freedom and the role of the government, and the questioner called her out for not mentioning slavery as a core factor behind the war.

On The Pulse of NH, Haley said “Of course the Civil War was about slavery. We know that. That’s the easy part of it. What I was saying was what does it mean us today? What it means to us today is about freedom. That’s what that was all about. It was about individual freedom, economic freedom, individual rights. Our goal is to make sure we never go back to the stain of slavery but what’s the lesson in all of that?”

Haley then went on to claim that the man who brought up the question was a Democrat “plant” who wanted to mess her up with a difficult question.

“It was definitely a Democrat plant,” she said. “When asked him, he didn’t want to answer. He didn’t give reporters his name.”

This explanation was met with skepticism from GOP operatives who noted that “What was the cause of the United States Civil War” was hardly a trick question:
