Pelosi: Democrats Won’t Fund Trump’s ‘Immoral’ Border Wall and Mexico Still Won’t Pay For it
Soon-to-be Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi blasted President Donald Trump‘s border wall on Thursday, promised that Democrats will not vote to fund the barrier, and reminded Americans that Mexico is not going to pay for it either.
At a press conference Thursday, reporters asked Pelosi about negotiations to keep the government open by passing a Continuing Resolution (CR), which keeps government spending at current levels until a full deal is reached.
Asked if she is “okay” with funding a border wall via the CR, Pelosi said “No,” and explained that current spending is for border security generally, and for fencing.
She added that “most of us, speaking for myself, consider the wall immoral, ineffective, and expensive, and the president… promised Mexico would pay for it.”
“Even if they did [pay for it], it’s immoral still, Pelosi continued, “and then they’re not going to pay for it, so that isn’t how I would interpret a continuing resolution.”
Pelosi added that America needs to secure our borders, but that we need to “do so by honoring our values, as well.”
For years, Trump has been promising that Mexico would pay for the border wall, but as Pelosi pointed out, it is American taxpayers who are now being asked to pay for it.
Trump has threatened to shut down the government if he doesn’t get funding for the border wall, but even thought Pelosi and the Democrats will be in the minority until the new House is seated in January, Republicans can’t keep the government open without Democratic votes in the Senate.
The shutdown showdown has been postponed until December 21, but Pelosi’s comments appear to indicate that Trump won’t get the $5 billion he’s demanding for the wall before the end of the year, and even less likely to get it once Pelosi takes over in January.
