Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) hit back at a Republican colleague this week after Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) boasted that younger, more recently elected Republicans mostly voted against foreign aid.
“Nearly every Republican Senator under the age of 55 voted NO on this America Last bill,” Schmitt wrote on X, adding:
15 out of 17 elected since 2018 voted NO
Things are changing just not fast enough.
Cramer, who is in his sixties and was elected in 2018, hit back at Schmitt and called out the Missouri Republican’s “naivety.”
“Youthful naivety is bliss, the wisdom of age may save the west. Reagan may be dead, but his doctrine saved the world during less dangerous times than these. If the modern Marx (Putin for the youngsters) restores the USSR while we pretend it’s not our problem, God help us. Be free!” Cramer wrote in reply.
The brief exchange between Cramer and Schmitt highlights the growing divide between the traditional GOP’s strong stance on national security and the MAGA-wing’s growing isolationism.
The U.S. Senate this week passed a $95 billion foreign aid bill to help shore up the defenses of Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan – key U.S. allies pushing back on Russian and Chinese advances. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has refused to bring the bill, which is opposed by former President Donald Trump, up for a vote in the House — where it would likely pass.
Cramer wasn’t the only one on social media to push back on Schmitt’s tweet, here are some more reactions:
