Hope Walz, the daughter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), claimed in a TikTok video that running for sport is a “political” act that’s only for the “privileged.”

In a two-minute video posted to TikTok, Hope Walz declared that her father is the one who her taught her that jogging is “political” and not for the underprivileged.

“Running as an act is political. And you know who taught me that? Tim Walz,” Hope Walz said. “The first thing he told me when I was getting into it in high school — granted, I don’t really do it as much anymore, I go in spurts — but when I first getting into it in high school, the first thing he told me is that running is a privilege and being part of the running community is a privilege that not all people have access to.”

The “privileges,” she argued, include having the “time to run,” “access to funds to buy the gear… healthy, quality food [and]… access to a safe stable situation that allows you to be in a good mental state.”

“All of those things are hard to come by and if you have them and you are apart of the running community, that is a privilege,” Hope Walz said. “That, again, was the first thing he taught me.”

The young Walz’s video was in response to running influencer Kate Mackz filming a video at the White House with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Mackz is known for conducting interviews while on the run with her guests. Last year, Mackz interviewed Tim Walz, who was then the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee.

Leavitt did not run with Mackz but offered a tour of the White House. Walz said she was previously “impressed” with Mackz, but found her new video “disappointing.”

Hope Walz blasted the running influencer for “platforming” the administration. Walz claimed the Trump administration is preventing people from getting into the “running community” by cutting federal social services and not tackling climate change. She also said it was “insulting” to her dad to leave his interview “pinned” on the influencer’s page while talking to a member of the current administration.

“Sending people away without due process, villainizing minorities, all of those things are preventing people from getting into the running community, which is what I thought Kate’s platform was for, but it’s also just damaging to society as a whole,” she said. “We should not be normalizing these people.”

Walz added, “We are quite literally talking about good versus evil here.”
