White House senior trade adviser Peter Navarro received backlash on Monday after he demanded that Elon Musk remove anonymous social media users and “foreigners” from his “cesspool” platform X.
Responding to a Musk post which read, “We must fight back or be murdered,” Navarro wrote:
My friend @ElonMusk. How about you start fighting back by cleaning up the cesspool otherwise known as X. No more anonymous posts. No more foreigners swarming your platform and polluting our political discourse. X has become a breeding ground and grooming Academy for the very dark forces. You wanna fight back. Physician, heal itself. Elon, heal X
Navarro quickly received backlash from social media users across the political spectrum.
“Careful @elonmusk – I think he might want to slap a tariff on you or something,” mocked Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), while First Amendment lawyer Adam Steinbaugh commented, “‘No more foreigners’ on the internet, argues serious person.”
Navarro made similar comments during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Monday.
“Elon, come on. Let’s get real, brother. X is the biggest cesspool of violent rhetoric in the country other than Facebook and if you want to make a real contribution, Elon, clean that damn thing up,” he said. “And I’ll tell you, Piers, here’s what should be done on X and Facebook and everywhere else. No more anonymity. No more hiding behind the mask of anonymity on social media.”
Navarro concluded, “If you won’t say something to somebody’s face in a civil setting, then you damn well shouldn’t be allowed to say it on X or Facebook or Instagram.”
