‘Is He Insane?’ Trump Twists the Knife Over Walz Accidentally Boasting That He’s ‘Become Friends With School Shooters’
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump twisted the knife over Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz’s accidental declaration that he’s “become friends with school shooters” during the vice presidential debate Tuesday night.
After being asked about his support for an assault weapons ban after previously opposing such a measure, Walz said ” Yeah, I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents. I’ve become friends with school shooters. I’ve seen it. Look, the NRA, I was NRA guy for a long time. They used to teach gun safety. I’m of an age where my shotgun was in my car so I could pheasant hunt after football practice. That’s not where we live today.”
“We have an epidemic of children getting guns and shooting themselves. And so we have and we should look at all of the issues, making sure folks have health care and all that. But I want to be very careful, this idea of stigmatizing mental health,” he continued. “Just because you have a mental health issue doesn’t mean you’re violent. And I think what we end up doing is we start looking for a scapegoat. Sometimes it just is the guns. It’s just the guns.”
On Truth Social, Trump delighted in Walz’s misstep, writing that it was the “second time he has said, ‘I’ve been friends with school shooters.'”
“What does he mean by this? Is he insane?” he asked facetiously.
The former president followed that up with another post in which he remarked that “Walz made a very big mistake on Gun Shooters,” before asking more rhetorical questions. “Does anyone think he knows what he said? Will he have a News Conference after the Debate to apologize to the parents and others who were so horribly hurt?”
Trump’s mocking tone could be contrasted with the more conciliatory demeanor of his running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH), who shared a personal moment on stage with Walz in which he expressed his regret over the fact that Walz’s son had to witness a school shooting.
