Tuberville Laments, ‘Our Military’s Struggling to Actually Put a Group Together’ as He’s Blocking Hundreds of Military Nominees
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who is blocking hundreds of military nominations, bemoaned the fact that the military is “struggling” to fill its personnel needs.
Tuberville has placed holds on all military promotions that are subject to Senate confirmation as his way of protesting a Department of Defense policy on abortion.
A slew of states have enacted abortion restrictions in the wake of last year’s Supreme Court decision striking down Roe v. Wade. In response, the Biden administration implemented a travel reimbursement policy, whereby abortion-seeking service members stationed in states where abortion is illegal, have their travel costs reimbursed when traveling to states that allow abortion.
Appearing on Tuesday’s edition of The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, the senator defended his ongoing blockade after host Laura Ingraham played a clip of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticizing his approach.
“I’m all for the military,” Tuberville responded. “And we’re in a tough time right now because our military’s struggling to actually put a group together, whether it’s Army, Navy, Air Force. I don’t work for Senator McConnell. You know, I like him fine. I work for the people of Alabama and the taxpayers of this country. I thought we’re pro-life. I am.”
His hold means that no military nominations can pass the Senate via unanimous consent, as most historically have. Rather, the nominees must be voted on individually. However, at this point, that would likely take hundreds of hours of floor time.
Tuberville then called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to bring the nominees to a vote on the floor.
“I’m tomorrow, actually putting some nominees on the floor myself to get them confirmed ’cause Chuck Schumer won’t do it,” he said. “If we’ve gotta do his job for him, that’s fine.
“Well, that’s where the rubber meets the road,” Ingraham replied. “If they decide no, we don’t want to vote on these, they just want the political issue for next year, correct?”
“Exactly,” the senator said “They want some kind of fodder to be able to use against us. But we’re actually fighting for the American people and our country.”
