WATCH: Trump Marvels ‘This Took 3,000 Years!’ as He Signs Gaza Peace Deal
President Donald Trump on Monday remarked that it “took 3,000 years” to achieve peace in the Middle East as he signed an apparent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas at a summit in Egypt.
Hours before the meeting, Hamas and Israel went through with a prisoner swap that saw thousands freed. This came a week after the announcement that the sides had agree to ceasefire. On Monday, Trump was in Egypt to meet with other world leaders in an effort to make the deal official.
After taking questions with his Cabinet and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Trump moved to a larger hall for the signing of a document. There, he was joined by a host of other leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Following more remarks, Trump was handed multiple papers to sign.
“This took 3,000 years to get to this point,” Trump said as he looked up and addressed the room. “Can you believe it? And it’s gonna hold up, too. It’s going to hold up.”
As noted in live reporting from both CNN and Al Jazeera, it was unclear at the time what the exact document was that Trump signed. It was then passed around the table for other world leaders to add their own signatures.
