Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) pulled no punches on Sunday in defending herself against an apparently false claim about the amount of money she has made since becoming a member of Congress.

Greene has made headlines in recent months for her success in the stock market, which she attributes to a financial manager making trades on her behalf. On Saturday evening, a conservative pro-Israel activist shared a headline from the financial website Benzinga and wrote, “How does Marjorie Taylor Greene’s net worth go from $700,000 before she joined Congress to $21 million today? A congressional salary is only $174,000 per year.”

Greene hit back in a lengthy reply, writing, “I’m fed up with the outright slander and lies about me because I’m UNAPOLOGETICALLY AMERICA FIRST and I am demanding AIPAC register as a foreign lobbyist and I refuse to vote for U.S. taxpayers hard earned money fund foreign aid and foreign wars.”

Greene has become a fierce critic of U.S. aid going to Israel in recent months, which has led to public spats between her and pro-Israel pundits and influencers – like Fox News host Mark Levin, with whom she exchanged insults over the weekend.

Greene continued her defense of her finances, adding, “I’ve owned my family’s construction business for well over two decades and made all of my net worth BEFORE I became a Member of Congress in 2021, and all of my Public financial disclosures show this.” She continued:

My publicly disclosed portfolio is diversely invested through a financial manager whom I’ve signed a fiduciary contract with. My hard earned wealth, that I am thankful and proud of HAS NOT in any way come from politics!!!

As a matter of fact I made a hell of a lot more money and my life was WAY EASIER before I entered public life.

I am so proud of my company’s success and hard work and there is not anyone who can shame me for being a successful business owner because thankfully I’ve lived the American dream!!!

You can go to hell.

I am FIGHTING to ensure that my children’s generation is able to do exactly what I have done!!!

I’m fighting to preserve the AMERICAN DREAM!!!

Independent journalist Yashar Ali weighed in on the original post and the Benzinga headline from June, noting, “I am famously no fan of Marjorie Taylor Greene, but you should fight people you disagree with using facts. It is not true that her net worth jumped from $700,000 to $21 million. That has been a piece of fake news circulating over the past six months. From the time she filed her first financial disclosure as a candidate until now, the bulk of her net worth has been her ownership stake in a family-owned construction company started by her father. She lists this ownership stake in her very first financial disclosure. Here is a screenshot from the financial disclosure covering the period between 2018 and 2019.”

A community note affixed to the original post also noted, “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s 2018-2019 financial disclosure (pg 8) lists her 100% interest in “Taylor Commercial, Inc.,” a family-owned business, valued at $5M-$25M, established before her 2021 Congress term.” The fact check cited Greene’s official financial disclosure form, which was released publicly by the Clerk of the House of Representatives.
