Tucker Carlson praised Steve Bannon as “brave and “magnanimous” in an interview weeks ahead of the former Donald Trump advisor’s prison sentence.
Bannon is facing a four month prison sentence next month over contempt of Congress charges. On Tuesday, he filed an appeal asking a judge to allow him to remain out of prison while he appeals the years-old conviction. Bannon joined Carlson on the same day for an interview and insisted he’s calm about the prospect of being behind bars.
“In my 20s I served my country on a Navy Destroyer [and] in my 70s I’ll serve my country in a federal prison. It doesn’t make any difference,” Bannon said.
Bannon was found in contempt of Congress after refusing to cooperate with the congressional subcommittee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. He described himself as a “political prisoner” in his interview with Carlson and argued he was only sentenced to prison “to make sure that some of the strongest or more aggressive of President Trump’s advocates are taken off the playing field.”
On how he’ll spend those four months behind bars, Bannon said he’ll read, study, keep in contact with the team behind his War Room podcast, and do “spiritual exercises.”
Bannon has avoided his sentence since 2022 through the appeals process, but he’s now facing an order to be put into custody on July 1. The political advisor said conservatives need to start “fighting like it’s a war.”
“This is a war to the knife. We have to win this. If we don’t win this, this country is going to devolve into some kind of neo Marxist totalitarian regime,” he said.
The former Trump advisor predicted his ex-boss would also be facing a prison sentence soon. Trump is facing sentencing on July 11 after being convicted of more than 30 felony counts in his Manhattan hush money trial. Bannon predicted Trump will be given sentenced to “years at Rikers Island,” but the sentence will be commuted amid the election.
Carlson wrapped up his chat with Bannon by calling him “brave and magnanimous.” Carlson argued Bannon has gone from being “prosecuted” to “persecuted.”
“You’re a brave and magnanimous man,” Carlson said. “So God bless you, good luck.”
“Tucker, thanks,” Bannon said. “I look forward to seeing you on the other side.”
