Colorado Football Coach Deion Sanders Shares Story of When He Knew His New Players Would Commit to the Team

Deion Sanders could tell that his new offensive linemen were committed to Colorado’s football team before any of them had even formally committed.

Sanders’ first year as Colorado’s head coach was a mixed bag. On one hand, the team improved from its brutal 1-11 season in 2022. On the other hand, however, the Buffaloes finished just 4-8 after starting the 2023 season 3-0.

Arguably the team’s biggest issue was its inability to win at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The offensive line struggled to protect quarterback — and Deion’s son — Shedeur Sanders, while the defensive line couldn’t generate consistent pressure on opposing QBs.

Deion wasted no time addressing that, signing five-star recruit Jordan Seaton to bolster the offensive line.

Appearing on The Stephen A. Smith Show on Friday, Sanders vowed that this year would be different. To illustrate that, he shared a story about the linemen going to dinner with Shedeur and other star players.

“A gentleman came over from within the crowd, came over and got smart with Shedeur and said things that were derogatory about me,” Deion said. “Now, Shedeur, he’s a walk-away (person). Shedeur ain’t gonna do nothing. Shilo (Sanders) would’ve swung. Shilo’s different. He would’ve swung. That’s why God knew who to put in that situation.

“But before Shedeur could even re-address the gentleman, his linemen — on a recruiting visit — came over there and was about to handle business. They had to be stopped, and they hadn’t even committed yet. So, that lets you know where this thing is going. Then, they went on to commit.”

According to 247Sports, the Buffaloes currently have the no. 21 recruiting class in the country with one five-star signing and nine four-star signings. For the second year in a row, Colorado has the country’s top transfer class. So far, 16 players have committed to Colorado after leaving their previous schools.
