Golf Announcer Accuses Tiger Woods of Taking ‘A Lot of Painkillers’ Amid Disastrous Round at British Open: ‘Look at the Eyes’

A golf announcer during Thursday’s opening round of the British Open made the bizarre decision to suggest Tiger Woods was on “a lot of” painkillers live on air.
Through 14 holes, Woods was a disastrous seven shots over par — tied for 133rd in the field. As a visibly frustrated Woods was shown on the Sky Sports broadcast, analyst Mark Roe theorized that Woods’ demeanor was the result of being heavily medicated.
“Uneven ground,” Roe said, “and you look at the eyes. You’ve gotta think that there’s quite a lot of painkillers being taken to cope with the pain, you know?”

The second half of Woods’ career has been marred by countless injuries — and that was only made worse when he was involved in a serious car crash in 2021. When he does compete, moving through the course does appear to be a struggle.
Still, a number of people online took exception to Roe outright assuming that Woods was on “a lot” of pills to deal with the pain.
Mark Roe is a really, really bad commentator https://t.co/HSX5ItloVF

A little bit odd for Mark Roe to just come out and say that. Not all the silences have to be filled#TigerWoods#OpenChampionship https://t.co/lMMjt7faYb

I watched this coverage for a bit on Peacock and the announcers were insufferable. Basically insulted Tiger the whole time. It was very weird. https://t.co/7vZiLTONoe

This is an insane thing to say on a broadcast https://t.co/6BGJUn5gz8
