Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) will introduce a bill on Friday that would name all U.S. coastal waters for Donald Trump, who turns 78 on that day.
The legislation seeks to rename the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone to the “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States.”
According to the National Ocean Service, the EEZ “extends no more than 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline and is adjacent to the 12 nautical mile territorial sea of the U.S.” and its territories. In this area, the U.S. has sovereign rights over exploration, exploitation, and conservation.
Steube told Fox News Digital he is introducing the bill because Trump “cares about the strength and resilience of our oceans.”
As president, Trump rolled back more than 100 environmental regulations, with several of them pertaining to the ocean.
“During his time in office, President Trump took several commendable actions for our oceans as part of his work to make America strong, secure, and economically prosperous,” Steube told Fox News. “I’m honored to introduce legislation that will rename our coastal waters after President Trump and serve as a reminder of his many contributions to our nation for generations to come.”
Even if the House passes Steube’s bill, it has no chance in the Senate.
As Fox News noted, earlier this year Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) introduced a bill that would rename Washington-Dulles International Airport for the former president. In response, Democrats countered with a bill to rename a federal prison in Florida for Trump, who is under federal criminal indictment in the state. Prosecutors allege he willfully kept classified documents after leaving office and obstructed the government’s efforts to retrieve them. He has pleaded not guilty.
