Donald Trump continued his attack on Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) after the longtime ally of the former president publicly disagreed with his abortion policy.
On Monday, Trump released a video in which he said abortion laws should be left to the states – not the federal government. The announcement disappointed many anti-abortion politicians and activists who were hoping the ex-president would come out in support of a nationwide ban.
“From a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state,” he said.
In response, Graham said Trump’s position “will age about as well as the Dred Scott decision,” where the Supreme Court ruled, among other things, that African Americans cannot be citizens.
Predictably, Trump fired back.
“Senator Lindsey Graham is doing a great disservice to the Republican Party, and to our Country,” he wrote in a lengthy post on Truth Social.
Hours later, the former president came back for more by claiming credit for Graham’s reelection in 2020 – while also blaming himself for same.
“I blame myself for Lindsey Graham, because the only reason he won in the Great State of South Carolina is because I Endorsed him!” said Trump, who followed that missive with another post stating that Graham “should study the 10th Amendment and States’ Rights.”
Graham made some waves ahead of the 2022 midterm elections when he introduced legislation that would ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The senator pitched his bill on Fox News at the time. It did not go well.
“Senator, Republicans are very angry at you,” Jesse Watters told him at the time. “Why’d you do it on that day? Not great timing. Don’t you see that?”
“I’m proudly pro-life and I have no apology for being pro-life,” Graham replied. “And there’s no bad time to defend the unborn.
“This is terrible timing, terrible tactics,” Watters protested.
