MAGA Crowd Roars as Trump Pledges to Restore Confederate General’s Name to Military Base

Former President Donald Trump vowed to rename a U.S. military base after a Confederate Civil War general while campaigning in North Carolina on Friday night.

Trump held a town hall event in the city of Fayetteville when he pledged during his opening remarks to change the name of Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg.

“Thank you very much,” Trump said after being introduced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). “Hello, everybody. How are you? Thank you very much, everybody, this is an honor. You know, I walked in, the first question that I asked, ‘Should we change the name Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg?’ First question!”

Trump was met by applause over the announcement.

“So here’s what we do, we get elected – I’m doing it, I’m doing it, I’m doing it – and we’re leading in all the polls, we should get elected, but remember this, they cheat like hell,” Trump said of Democrats. “We gotta – too big to rig. We need too big to rig. So, I just appreciate being here.”

The former president concluded, “You know, we did win two world wars from Fort Bragg, right? So this is no time… to be changing names, but we’re gonna do that. We’re gonna do everything we can. We’re gonna get it back. We’re gonna bring our country back.”

The base Trump referred to was founded in 1918 as Fort Bragg, named after West Point graduate and Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg. The massive military complex was renamed last year over its ties to the pro-slavery South. CNN reported:

Fort Bragg was among nine bases that a congressional commission proposed renaming, but while the others have been – or are expected to be – redesignated after notable people, Fort Liberty will be the only facility named after a value.

The Army acknowledged concerns from those who argue the history of the base should be preserved, but said on its website that “no act can take away from the heritage this installation’s service members created while stationed here or anywhere else, serving our nation.”
