New Italian PM Nabs Trump’s Praise, White House Invite After Agreeing With POTUS on Russia

President Donald Trump praised Giuseppe Conte on Saturday and announced Italy’s new Prime Minister would soon be joining him at the White House.

“Just met the new Prime Minister of Italy, @GiuseppeConteIT, a really great guy. He will be honored in Washington, at the @WhiteHouse, shortly. He will do a great job – the people of Italy got it right!” Trump wrote heaping praise on Conte.

Trump’s tweet comes after Conte tweeted out his agreement with Trump that Russia should be re-admitted to the now G7.

“I agree with President (Trump). Russia should be re-admitted into the G8. It is in the interests of everyone,” Conte said in a tweet, according to Reuters‘ translation.

After receiving the invite to Washington from the president, however, Conte later clarified he meant re-admitting Russia only if certain conditions were met.

It is unclear if Trump knew about Conte’s clarification when he tweeted praise of the new Italian PM, however, it does seem that he left the G7 in a good mood, as evidenced by this follow-up tweet:

Trump is now headed to Singapore for his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
