CNN Analyst on POTUS Bomb Scare Remarks: ‘Everyone Knows’ Trump is ‘Primary Proponent’ of Coarse Discourse

Immediately following the remarks from President Donald Trump on the suspicious packages sent to CNN and several high-profile Democratic politicians, a CNN panel reacted with some criticism that he wasn’t more forceful in decrying these threats.

CNN national security analyst Carrie Cordero said, “I thought it was the absolute bare minimum that the American people could expect from the president to say given the circumstances of multiple devices being sent to former presidents, prominent people and former administration officials and the news media and CNN. So I thought it was the bare minimum.”

She particularly attributed to Trump a personal responsibility for the problem with the political rhetoric in the country. “Everybody knows that the President is the one who has contributed and is the primary proponent behind the coarseness of American political discourse,” she said. She added that while his comments this afternoon were good, the question now becomes “what he does next.”

David Gergen agreed that Trump “said the right things,” but he should have elaborated more to make a broader statement about any violence against the news media is unacceptable.

Gloria Borger too said he should’ve been more “complete” in talking about who was targeted.
