CNN Data Reporter Harry Enten Warns Dems Face Uphill Battle Because Trump Is ‘More Popular Now Than He Has Ever Been’
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Democrats may face an uphill battle in the 2024 presidential race because Donald Trump is “more popular now than he ever has been before.”
Coming out of the Republican National Convention and an attempted assassination, Trump is netting some of his best favorability scores in polls, Enten reported in a segment on Tuesday with Sara Sidner.
Enten highlighted the fact that Trump scored his highest favorability ratings in polls this month from ABC News/Ipsos and Quinnipiac University. In the former poll, Trump hit 40% and in the latter he hit 46%.
“The fact is Donald Trump is more popular now than he ever has been before so, yes, Democrats can make this switcheroo, but they’re still going to have to beat Donald Trump, a Donald Trump who is stronger, Sara, than he has ever been before,” Enten reported.
Looking at a national average of polls, Vice President Kamala Harris is currently trailing Trump by 1%, meaning it will be a close race. The vice president, however, has not officially accepted the nomination. She’s racking up endorsements and has already secured enough delegates though.
In 2020, Biden managed to get 4% ahead of Trump in the popular vote, but Enten argued another number presents an opportunity for Democrats with their new presumptive nominee.
In the ABC/Ipsos poll, only 9% said they have no opinion of Trump while 19% said they have no opinion of Harris, leaving many voters that can still be convinced, Enten said.
“The truth is that presents Democrats with a major opportunity, right?” he reported. “Because it could be that their perceptions of Kamala Harris are proven wrong based upon her campaign rhetoric and her campaign actions, but they could be proven wrong either way. She could be much better than they think or she could be much worse than they think.”
