CNN’s Chris Cuomo Likens Morning Joe to Hannity: ‘How is This Different?’

New Day’s Chris Cuomo took aim at morning show rival Morning Joe for its hosts’ former chumminess with President Donald Trump during a segment on Sean Hannity’s relationship with the White House.

Brian Stelter appeared on New Day to discuss a Washington Post report that described Fox News host Hannity as Trump’s “unofficial chief of staff.”

“What is Sean Hannity?” Stelter asked. “Is he a newsman — he says no — an opinion guy? Is he the president’s shadow chief of staff? I thought the Washington Post’s reporting was so so interesting because it really portrays this television host as someone who should be in the White House organizational chart. As someone who essentially has a desk at the White House.”

“Sean Hannity, these staffers believe, gives the president policy advice,” Alisyn Camerota remarked. “And the president gives Sean Hannity show advice, acting as his E.P. for the show.”

“I guess maybe this is going to be the new normal,” Stelter said.

“Full disclosure, Morning Joe is opposite us for MSNBC in the morning,” New Day host Cuomo said. “How is this different than Morning Joe?”

Cuomo went on to recall the days of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s remarkable friendliness with Trump during the 2016 campaign, before they turned on the now-president.

“Remember in the days of the glow, when [Joe] and Mika spoke to Trump all the time, they had him on, discussed what questions to talk about in the break. They were the Trump whisperers.”

“I was watching the headlines closely, because I believed it worked against us here,” Cuomo continued. “Because we didn’t have that kind of access because we weren’t ‘mwah mwah mwah’ with Donald Trump all the time.”

“And now it’s suiting them to do the opposite,” he added, “that hasn’t been called out either.”
