CNN’s Toobin Rips GOP’s ‘Pathetic’ Silence on Trump’s McCain Attacks: ‘Unbelievable Cowards’ Afraid of Primaries
CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin expressed disgust toward the GOP on Wednesday for not condemning President Donald Trump‘s attacks on John McCain more forcefully.
Toobin was on New Day to discuss a report that Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) intends to denounce Trump’s smears of McCain, after saying anyone who disrespects the senator’s legacy “deserves a whipping.”
Toobin called it “pathetic” that a single GOP official can make news by rebuking the president on this while the majority of the Republican Party remains silent.
“How pathetic that 50 Republican senators have said nothing about this incredibly disgraceful performance by the president,” Toobin said. “That makes news because they are all such unbelievable cowards because they’re afraid of Republican primaries.”
While Toobin acknowledged Isakson’s planned remarks and Mitt Romney‘s (R-UT) condemnation of Trump, he compared the McCain situation to how Thom Tillis (R-NC) blatantly flip-flopped in his promise to oppose Trump’s emergency declaration. The conversation continued with a focus on the vitriol that has been directed at McCain’s family amid Trump’s attacks on the late senator.
