Cory Booker Announces Senate Candidacy, Praises Late Senator Lautenberg

“I’m here today to officially announce my candidacy to be New Jersey’s next United States senator,” Cory Booker said at a Newark press conference Saturday morning.

Booker is running to fill the seat of the late Frank Lautenberg, whom he called a “giant in the United States Senate.” The Newark mayor will face a primary in August, and will run in a special election in October, which many believe that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called to keep the popular Booker off the November ballot.

A rising star in the Democratic party, Booker first came to attention with his quixotic run for Newark mayor, which was chronicled in the film Street Fight. Since then, Booker has cut a high profile, especially on Twitter, where he responds personally to constituents’ tweets.

Booker was introduced and endorsed by Senator Bill Bradley, whom he praised as his first model in politics.
