CNN’s Don Lemon spoke with Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, a friend of President Trump‘s, and they went from talking about the new Russia reports to arguing about media bias.
Ruddy questioned why the news about Michael Cohen sending an email to a Kremlin spokesman about a real estate deal is such big news, saying it’s “total BS” and it proves there was “no collusion.”
As they went back-and-forth about the President’s business connections, Lemon brought up Trump’s tax returns and Ruddy said that the President isn’t obliged to just because the press wants him to.
Ruddy continued to insist that this dismantles the collusion argument, and told him this is about a media narrative being pushed. Lemon shot back, “The media’s supposed to ask those questions. That’s what were supposed to do.”
Ruddy said it’s more than just questions, it’s “constant bias.”
Ruddy proceeded to bring up positive Trump news he doesn’t think the media is covering enough, and he claimed that his approval ratings are “much in line with what Obama had most of his presidency.” Lemon called him out on that and said, “Chris, you run Newsmax, which is a news organization… And you’re going to sit here and tell me that Obama and Trump have the same approval ratings?”
Ruddy proceeded to argue “selective news,” telling Lemon that he “never” does the “good stories” from the White House. He said that CNN’s viewers are more “fair-minded” than others.
He also revealed to Lemon that he chatted with Trump today and “he had a lot of things to say about you.” But he didn’t want to get specific so he wouldn’t “upset” his night.
Lemon then made a request of Ruddy to ask the President something:
“There are lots of people on this network and others who don’t look like me who are harder on this President and who say disparaging things about this president. But he doesn’t get as upset with them as he does with me. Why is that?”
Ruddy said, “Generally, he thinks CNN should be more the gold standard.”
Lemon shot back, “He’s not running CNN. He’s supposed to be running the country. Why is he concerned about CNN?”
Ruddy––who just yesterday downplayed Trump’s media attacks as “theatrical”––asked him if CNN is covering the reforms at the VA. Lemon said of course they are, saying CNN as a news organization is more than just what happens on TV.
