Former House Republican Torches ‘Gobsmackingly Stupid’ Move by Trump and GOP In Spending Fight: ‘They’ve Changed Their Minds!’

Former Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) laid into President-elect Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and House Republicans over a doomed bill to avert a government shutdown.

On Wednesday night, House Republicans junked a bill introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) that would avoid a shutdown beginning on Dec. 21 and keep the government funded through March 14. Musk began firing off a series of tweets slamming the bill early Wednesday morning. That was followed by CNN reporting that Trump privately called the bill “bad.” Finally, Trump issued multiple statements opposing the bill and threatening primaries for Republicans who voted for it.

Dent appeared on Wednesday’s OutFront on CNN, less than an hour before it was reported Republicans scrapped the legislation. The former Republican congressman was supposed to be in the studio, but got stuck in traffic and joined via video on his phone.

“Seventy posts from Elon Musk,” host Erin Burnett said, marveling at the volume of Musk’s tweets. “Seventy, starting at 4:15 a.m. stirring this up. Trump weighs in finally. And here we are. Chaos and disarray. What do you think’s happening here?”

“Well, this is governmental dysfunction,” Dent replied. “These are exhibits A, B, C, D, and F. What’s happening here is that Donald Trump and the hardliners in the House Republican conference wanted to kick these appropriations bills into the new year’s, into the new year. They got their wish, and they’re gonna fund the government until March the 13th or 14th. And now Elon Musk and Donald Trump don’t want to do that. They’ve changed their minds!”

Dent later added, “This is gobsmackingly stupid.”
