GOP Senator Blames ‘Staffer’ for Security Leak Even After Mike Waltz Admitted, ‘A Staffer Wasn’t Responsible’

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) blamed a staffer for the Trump administration’s national security leak, despite White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz admitting on Fox News that “a staffer wasn’t responsible” the day before.

During an interview with Hawley on Wednesday’s Jesse Watters Primetime, Fox News host Jesse Watters asked, “So this thing’s over, it was a mistake, and you think everybody’s been held accountable and owned it?”

“You know, listen, I thought that the national security adviser was clear about this yesterday, the president was clear about it,” replied Hawley. “You know, some staffer who apparently set up the group chat– I assume that person probably won’t be in charge of meetings anymore.”

He continued, “At the end of the day, this strike was successful. There was no classified material out there, the strike was not compromised in any way. America is safer today because of the actions that President Trump took. The libs can’t complain about that so here we are. I would say case closed.”

Hawley’s comments contradicted those made by Waltz on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle on Tuesday, when he admitted that a staffer was not responsible for accidentally inviting The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a top-secret Signal group chat about the Trump administration’s plans to bomb Yemen.

“Look, a staffer wasn’t responsible,” said Waltz, who set up the group chat. “I take full responsibility. I built the group. My job is to make sure everything’s coordinated.”

On Monday, Hawley dismissed the national security blunder as Democrats “griping about who’s on a text message.”
