GOP Strategist Mocks Midterm Candidates Proving Loyalty to Trump: ‘It’s Like a Stalin Trial Now’
While certain GOP midterm candidates are pushing hard for votes ahead of the primaries with ads rallying around President Donald Trump, Republican strategist Mike Murphy felt the hopefuls were looking desperate.
“It’s like a Stalin trial now. It’s unbelievable.” Murphy told NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press Sunday. “It is the new reality of the Republican primary.”
Murphy’s criticisms came in response to ads from John James and Sandy Pensler, two conservatives vying for Michigan’s Senate seat. James, who’s received the president’s endorsement, has accused Pensler of being anti-Trump, while Pensler says he’s praised Trump, both trying to show their adoration for the administration.
The problem, Murphy explained, was that while that tactic could garner support in the primary, it wouldn’t help either to win over swing voters in the general.
“Now you come out of this thing from the Trump church in the Republican primary with a big Trump halo, but in the general election Democrats all hate Trump and among Independents he’s mostly upside down,” Murphy told Todd. “So what is your magic light sword in the primary becomes an anchor around your neck in the general.”
