Kavanaugh’s Raging Opening Statement Stuns Twitter: ‘Rage and Partisan Fury’

Following the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford who claims to have been sexually assaulted by Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the SCOTUS nominee took the witness stand Thursday afternoon to defend himself.
Launching into a fiery statement refuting Ford’s allegations, Kavanaugh appeared nothing short of enraged by what he called a “grotesque and coordinated character assassination” devised to undermine his confirmation process, an argument to which some on the right have held fast amid a turbulent round of hearings.
Twitter immediately took note of the judge’s frustration, reporters remarking on its “tone of outrage, indignation” and his effort “to make the allegations against him seem as partisan as possible.”
But it wasn’t just journalists. Even John Legend jumped in with a strong rebuke of his own, asking, “Who coached him to sound like a complete asshole?”
However, Kavanaugh’s emotional remarks then turned teary, as he welled up discussing the calendars he kept which detailed his activities in part during the 1980s when the alleged assault occurred. The judge has argued that those diaries dismiss Ford’s claims.
Reporting on the response in Washington, CNN’s Brian Karem cited a White House source saying, “Kavanaugh is losing it.”
Check out the range of reactions below:
Kavanaugh going the full Clarence Thomas here – reflecting intensity and anger over the allegations he now faces.

Trump has reportedly been urging Kavanaugh to hit back harder. He seems to have taken that to heart, angrily rebutting the allegations against him.

Kavanaugh’s tone both copies Trump and seems obviously designed to impress him.

Well I’m convinced Kavanaugh doesn’t have a anger issue.

This is a fantastic open. Kavanaugh is fighting like we need all conservatives fighting against this poisoned process.
— Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) September 27, 2018
Kavanaugh is glaring at the senators and roughly flipping the pages of his opening statement as his voice shakes in anger.

Trump wants people who are defiant and defend themselves. But he also knows when their attempts to do so hit the wrong notes and make things worse. https://t.co/ZGUPmmWN41
— Eli Stokols (@EliStokols) September 27, 2018
Kavanaugh is trying to make the allegations against him seem as partisan as possible. He wants it to seem partisan, but there was nothing at all to indicate during Ford’s testimony that she was motivated by partisanship.
— James Hohmann (@jameshohmann) September 27, 2018
Who coached him to sound like a complete asshole?
— John Legend (@johnlegend) September 27, 2018
Is Kavanaugh about to drop out?
— John Heilemann (@jheil) September 27, 2018
This sounds like Sean Spicer’s inauguration crowd size press conference

Kavanaugh is talking himself out of a job.
— Reza Aslan (@rezaaslan) September 27, 2018
This does not feel like the tone of a Supreme Court judge.
— Kelly Magsamen (@kellymagsamen) September 27, 2018
Tough road here. Kavanaugh, if innocent, is entirely justified in being furious. At same time, a potential future Supreme Court justice is launching direct, partisan hits at Democrats and the Left.
— David Rutz (@DavidRutz) September 27, 2018
Kavanaugh’s message – “the Left”; “Borking”; “revenge on behalf of the Clintons”; “goes around comes around” – is that of a man who has already lost his Court seat, preparing for his next career
— David Frum (@davidfrum) September 27, 2018
Did not expect this statement to be a screamo cover of The Boys Are Back in Town.
— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) September 27, 2018
kavanaugh currently choking up with tears while talking about calendars

Good to see he’s standing up for beer.
— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) September 27, 2018
“I am innocent of this charge.” Thus ends an extraordinarily emotional opening statement by Kavanaugh — angry, defiant, tear-filled.
— Julie Davis (@juliehdavis) September 27, 2018
Kavanaugh’s rage and partisan fury make it even more disturbing to think of him as a justice on the highest court of the land.
