Kimmel Touts Cherry-Picked Polls on Medicare For All, Gun Laws, Insists ‘This is What Americans Believe’

 

On the eve of the 2018 midterms, Jimmy Kimmel attempted to prove that Americans aren’t as divided as we think we are.

Kimmel began by telling the audience that throughout the election season, we’ve been told how “hopelessly divided America is” but asked the question, “Are we really?”

He then shared over a dozen poll numbers which he cited as “recent polls of Americans.”

87% want to protect social security.

70% favor medicare for all.

75% support coverage for pre-existing conditions.

72% want to keep insurers from charging sick people more.

86% want to protect the DREAMers.

70% say immigration should be kept at current levels or increased.

68% support stronger rules on the financial industry.

76% support higher taxes on the wealthy.

78% support paid family and medical leave.

66% support stricter gun laws.

97% support universal background checks.

59% say we need to do more to fight climate change.

68% say we can fight climate change and protect jobs.

62% support tuition-free college based on income levels.

83% support net neutrality.

77% want limits on how much people and organization can contribute to political campaigns.

“Take a look at that,” Kimmel urged his audience to look at the graphic behind him. “That doesn’t look so divided to me… This is what Americans believe. If this is what Americans believe, then you should vote for candidates who believe in those things instead of just picking an R or a D.”

According to a brief disclaimer that appeared at the bottom of the screen, the polling from various sources such as CNBC, The Washington Post, The Hill, Pew Research, Axios, and Quinnipiac. It is unclear which numbers came from which source and when the polling was conducted.
